A smoking ban? Here??

Currently there is a bill in Wyoming State Legislature to essentially make Wyoming a little more civilized and ban smoking in public places. House Bill 141 is essentially based upon the bill that passed in Cheyenne and Colorado which made those places a little better.

Will this bill pass? I can only hope, but something tells me that the "Wyoming Attitude" will prevail and it won't. Especially since it is opposed by both the Wyoming State Liquor Association and the Wyoming Lodging and Restaurant association. Somehow those people think that this will make all bars go out of business, but anyone who has been to Colorado lately can attest that there are still people going to bars in that state. It's just that now the poor smokers have to step outside for a moment to indulge their filthy habit.

I used to feel the same way.But since I live in Colorado let's look at some things happening here. There are people looking at the smoking ban to determine if it is constitutional. I walked into a high end tabbaconinst in Santa Monica and purchased a fine cigar. You cannot smoke indoors anywhere in Santa Monica. The new bowling alley in Grand Junction has a high end wine bar and cigar shop.Soft jazz piano music.Italian slate billiard and pool tables. I saw that on there website and thought how maybe a little culture was coming.Well now there is no one in there and the owner of the establishment cannot even smoke one of his fine cigars that are sitting there rotting.Yes it nice to go into places and have the smoke free enviroment but one more time big brother looks out for us all. The owners of the businesses have no control over what takes place in there own establishment. What's next a bar with no hard liquor because you can get drunk to fast? Where does it stop? Elect Hillary Clinton for president.

Our lame duck council and dastardly mayor passed a smoking ban in Evanston as their last group act in December. And while Kate's would surely get more of my business- and possibly a new part-time employee- if it actually goes into effect in September, I can't help but wince at the fact that Kate's is Rachel and Victor's property, and no one but they should be able to dictate what their patrons can and cannot do in that building.

On the other hand, my boss claims that the research proving secondhand smoke is bogus and insists on smoking in his house when his grandchildren come to play. And that makes me hope they eventually ban smoking everywhere in the whole wide world, and that poor smokeless purveyor of fine rotting cigars can find something worthwhile to do with his very cultured time.

Vegas repealed their ban, and it's gone to a higher court. It will get all the way to the top. And if it passes, they may well go ahead and ban hard liquor and fast cars and jumpropes, because those are potentially dangerous, too.

I'm going to live in a secluded cabin in the Windrivers now. I'll be waiting on the porch with a shotgun if anybody wants to smoke within a hundred feet of me or tell me I can't if I decide I want to.

Sorry about the bitter diatribe.

A “High End” Cigar Bar and Pool hall in Grand Junction Colorado sounds like an oxy moron to me. That place was on the ropes long before the proprietor even laid out their business model. They should have studied Grand Junction’s demographic more closely. An establishment like that works in Santa Monica or the Bay Area (without the smoking) because a larger percentage is “young” people with disposable income.

By the way – Utah is already has the weird bar rules like that and there’s many dry counties in the South that have no alcohol at all. Your rights aren’t being lost – don’t forget the prohibition – if failed miserably (Do the research and you will see why). Please don’t jinx us with that Hillary statement.

I was curious and Googled the side of the folks who enjoy the occasional to excessive coffin nails. They even talked about statistics 101 and 102 and they even demonstrated their intellectual prowess by calling the opposing ideology “nannies.” Bias research tends leave out key statistics about how the information was collected, and the confidence level of the data. I’m sure one key point left out of the Statistics is the natural attrition of bars and restaurants. For example there was one place in my home town that started off as a “High End” French restaurant, sat empty for 5 years, they turned it into a bar, and it was open on and off with many different names for about 15 years – I believe it sits bare as of this date. Mr. Beckhoff knows this place as Cactus Jacks in Laramie Wyoming. Who knows some college drop out might be collecting the rest of their parent’s college fund to open yet another bar doomed to failure. The high attrition after a ban is enacted can be explained by the bars better known as “dives.” In smaller towns these places are staying afloat by the smoke of 10 or so crusty old regulars and the ban sends these guys home. These tired old places have nothing to attract new smokeless customers.

There’s no voodoo witchcraft involving the studies of how unhealthy smoking is aside of second hand smoke.

Change is a good thing with respect to this subject – move on don’t waste your energy on this subject. You think your rights are being lost – perhaps you should read the Patriot Act created by your beloved moron leader’s administration.
